THE BASE NOTES
Love is not on this sheet because love is the sheet: the string's own sound, the base note under every reading. The six base emotions are not moods — they are instruments on the panel, each reporting one thing. Every base emotion has a healthy form (the signal, heard and answered), an excess (the signal stuck on), a deficit (the signal muted), and derivations — what the signal becomes when it is held, blocked, or aimed. None of them is a bad emotion. There are only read signals and unread ones.
LAWS OF THE SHEET
- A blocked emotion is not compressed. Compressed was felt and stored, and comes out near the size it went in. Blocked was never allowed to sound — when it finally does, it is not a memory, it is a first time, and it arrives at the original size. That is why a grown adult can go down like a child. It is the right size, arriving late.
- No emotion can be commanded. A demanded note can only be performed — which is why the funeral leaves you dry and the small object in the supermarket takes you down. Resonance needs no audience and no request.
- The excess and the deficit are not two disorders. They are one unread signal, jammed loud or jammed silent.
Joy joy
SIGNAL — The string sounding as itself. The payout side of the meaning engine: a positive charter, paying out.
Available joy — arrives in person, unpriced, leaves without being billed for leaving. The visitor model.
The requirement of permanent intensity — a pump demanding its differential. Joy conscripted as evidence that the life is working.
TELL — Can happiness leave without being billed for leaving?
A negative charter (don't lose, survive this) pays relief at best, by construction. Relief borrows joy's entire arrival — lightness, tears, gratitude — and carries none of its cargo.
TELL — Is this good, or is it just not bad?

Sadness sad
SIGNAL — Loss, measured. The price tag on the back of love — it reports that something mattered.
Grief that completes — the debt felt all the way to the end, and released. What ap5 is made of.
Grief adopted as identity. The debt is displayed instead of grieved; releasing it would cost the self built around carrying it.
TELL — Is the loss being felt, or worn?
Losses logged but never felt — paid instead in installments: the low ceiling, the flat year, the heaviness with no invoice attached.
TELL — Can you name what the heaviness is about? A felt loss has a name.
- the delayed deliverySadness blocked at the event returns years later off a small object — a jar, a song, a smell — because the object asks for nothing. The coffin was the demand; the jar is the permission. It is not a breakdown. It is the forty minutes the body requested daily, finally granted.

Fear fear
SIGNAL — A wolf, present tense. The body points at it, mobilizes, and — when the wolf leaves — stands down. An event, not a posture.
Fear carried forward — the required ingredient of courage. It never needs to be eliminated, only outranked by a value.
Fear with the address torn off. Wolf-readiness held with no wolf in the room — because the threat is future, chronic, or forbidden to name. The alarm held down, not the alarm ringing. Smoke comes from fire; smoke is not fire.
TELL — Remove a scheduled wolf and anxiety doesn't heal — it evaporates. If rest arrives when the calendar clears, it was anxiety, not fear.
The alarm unplugged instead of outranked. Already assayed as the counterfeit of courage — courage hears the alarm and walks; recklessness never heard it.
TELL — Was there anything to overcome?
Anger ang
SIGNAL — A boundary, crossed. Fuel, delivered to the gate — enough energy to redraw the line, on schedule.
Boundary fuel — anger spent the day it arrives, on the line it arrived for. It draws the border without burning the house.
Anger stored instead of spent. Held long enough, boundary fuel becomes flood — and the flood always lands on someone smaller than the original trespasser.
TELL — Is this anger the size of this event?
No anger available at the border. Every crossing is absorbed, smiled at, explained away — the raw material of people-pleasing. The fuel was confiscated early, usually by someone who needed the gate open.
TELL — When did you last say no and let it stand?
- the two angersTwo angers can share a body and read identically from inside. One is arguing with a verdict — 'prove I'm not what you said' — and it is bottomless, because no amount of force disproves an accusation already accepted. The other has dismissed the court: 'not acceptable, and not negotiable' — it defends the line and goes home. Two field tests separate them. Ask what would satisfy it: the standing kind has a condition and ends when the condition is met; the verdict kind has none, because its actual demand is that the past un-happen. And watch what it produces: the standing kind produces an act — a sentence, a boundary, a closed door; the verdict kind produces rehearsal — the perfect reply, composed at three in the morning, for a scene that ended years ago. Rehearsal is the tell. Force that is going somewhere does not run simulations.
- the turbine and the damThe refusal to feel anger rests on a true observation: everyone has seen what living from anger does. But from inside, living from it and feeling it are indistinguishable — both register as pressure, on the same gauge. Pressure was never the reading that mattered; the reading that matters is whether the water moves. Dammed, the force stays, does no work, and the holding is billed continuously out of the budget that funds everything else. Run through a turbine, the same water works and — this is the entire mechanism — leaves. That is why anger felt passes, and anger held is still there twenty years later, its owner calling it his temperament. Direction is the second test: the anger that damages runs down the power gradient, at what cannot answer back, and evaporates in front of anything its own size — it was a control tool, not strength. The anger of repair runs up the gradient, at what harmed, on behalf of what could not defend itself. Same heat, opposite vector.
- the cabinet guardAnger conscripted to defend a filing instead of a boundary. When naming a 'normal' thing as wrong draws instant fury, the fury is not defending the thing — it is defending the filing. This is how a blocked note is spotted from outside: pull a face, watch who gets furious.

Surprise sur
SIGNAL — The model broke. New data arrived that the map didn't predict — attention floods to the gap.
Discovery — the gap enjoyed. The model updated with pleasure instead of defended with force.
The gap used as a pump: surprise chased for its jolt, model after model cracked open and none rebuilt. Seeking without finding, by design.
TELL — Does anything get to become familiar?
Assay owed — held for its own entry. Provisional reading: not an absence of stimulus but a starved signal; a life so defended that no data is allowed to break the model.

- the uncannySurprise's dark reading: near-but-wrong. A performed frequency lands close to a true note, and the wrongness is the loudest thing in the room. This is discernment's raw signal — the spark that fires when an operator plays your tuning. It cannot be suppressed from outside; it can only be overridden from inside, by hunger.

Trust tru
SIGNAL — Prediction, holding. The quiet report that the model and the world still agree — the ground under every bond.
Discernment-backed trust — extended after the spark was consulted, not instead of consulting it. Trust with its eyes open.
Trust extended over a firing alarm. The uncanny spark fires — something is wrong here — and hunger overrides it, because a badly-played note is more than nothing. Manipulation does not work by fooling the instrument; it works by starving it first.
TELL — Did the spark fire, and who ordered it ignored?
The refusal installed as taste. Often inherited — a filter handed down by someone on your side and obeyed for decades as if it were your own reading. Not a conclusion from evidence; a note being refused.
TELL — Was this distrust ever actually tested, or was it issued to you?
