COUNTERFEIT OF DIGNITY
The posture without the reservoir: correct, composed, and entirely for the room. Same bearing as dignity from across it — but decorum is addressed to an audience, and dignity is addressed to no one.

DIGNITY
Self-respect with the joy removed and nothing put in its place. SELF-RESPECT stands on a reservoir; dignity is the posture the reservoir taught, held after it has run dry — in grief, in illness, under humiliation. Which is why it is seen almost only in suffering: that is the one condition under which it can be told apart from self-respect at all. In good weather they are the same thing. Humiliation is a ranking operation; dignity is what a person looks like when the operation fails to find purchase.
TRAINED BY — Trained in every room that disagrees, like self-respect — and then, separately, in the rooms where there is nothing to stand on and the posture holds anyway. Not by winning. Nobody else was ever load-bearing in it.
