ARROGANCE
COUNTERFEIT OF SELF-RESPECT
Not an excess of self-regard — self-regard that requires a comparison to stay upright. A pump makes pressure from a differential, so another person's fullness has to cost it something. Empty the room and arrogance has nothing left underneath; self-respect is unaffected, because nobody else was ever load-bearing in it.
THE TELL
Watch what happens when someone beside you is excellent. If it costs you, it's the pump. If it pays you, you're on the other side — that state has a name, and it's mudita.
FORMULA DIFF
- −Trust
there is no reservoir underneath — nothing is being stood on
- −stay on your own side
the regard is borrowed from position instead of held
- +Serotonin
status is the entire supply
- +Cortisol
someone else's excellence registers as an incoming threat
- Joy
- “my worth is not a ranking”
THE GENUINE ARTICLE
SELF-RESPECT
The spring. Self-regard standing on a reservoir instead of pumping from a deficit, so it needs nobody smaller to hold itself upright. Identical horsepower to arrogance — different employer. The axis was never ego versus love; it is empty versus full.
TRAINED BY — Not trained by achieving — achieving feeds the pump. Trained by being received. Love is not its fuel; it is the water table underneath it. Diagnostic: another person's excellence raises your enjoyment rather than costing you.
