Self-respect with the joy removed and nothing put in its place. SELF-RESPECT stands on a reservoir; dignity is the posture the reservoir taught, held after it has run dry — in grief, in illness, under humiliation. Which is why it is seen almost only in suffering: that is the one condition under which it can be told apart from self-respect at all. In good weather they are the same thing. Humiliation is a ranking operation; dignity is what a person looks like when the operation fails to find purchase.

HOW IT IS TRAINED
Trained in every room that disagrees, like self-respect — and then, separately, in the rooms where there is nothing to stand on and the posture holds anyway. Not by winning. Nobody else was ever load-bearing in it.
NOTE & CRAFT
The two-year-old who refuses to be carried. Standing on your own feet is standard-issue; nobody teaches it.
The reservoir's posture, held on credit. Staying on your own side with nothing paying out — and the part that is easy to get wrong: dignity can still receive. It shares a wall with gratitude's palms-up. What cannot accept help was never dignity.
Two diagnostics split them anywhere: the arrival-feel — recognition (“I was this all along”) is a note unblocked; brick-by-brick is craft — and the energy test — playing the note energizes even when hard; performing an import drains even when easy. Sheet 03 →
THE COUNTERFEIT
DECORUM
The posture without the reservoir: correct, composed, and entirely for the room. Same bearing as dignity from across it — but decorum is addressed to an audience, and dignity is addressed to no one.
THE TELL — Is it the same when the room empties? Dignity does not change when nobody is watching. Decorum was never for the person wearing it.
